It's all about cooking

Sadly, while the bacon, eggs and baked beans on the cover of Orwells 'in defence of english cooking' make for a good pocket penguin 70th birthday edition cover, Orwells defense of english cooking is the only weak part of the collection of short essays. Orwell talks about oxford marmalade and apples, and while it is quite touching, and in some respects even almost convincing, the issue reveals the soft underbelly of the construct 'english'.
i have often thought about this in respect to other things, that is, i have often considered how life can be unfair, how we dont all get handed the same package of benefits, and all the same we continue to a. feel it is unfair and b. try and explain to ourselves why being short fat ugly but with good skin is better than being rich, famous, stunning but divorced (for example). In defense of english cooking, and may Orwell who I think is a wondrful wonderful genious writer forgive me, is kinda like an optimistic consolation bitching-therapy session.
but anyway...

...especially since most of the food he describes isn't available in london anyway, thanks to pan-euro-asian-american-waga-mexican restaurants everywhere!

english cooking is ... burnt toast! (as i've eaten in oxford)
