The Long War Against Nuts

An article from the 10th of February in the online International Herald Tribune option section begins: The U.S. Defense Department and the White House have decided that the United States is now conducting "the Long War" rather than what previously was known as the War against Terror, then as the Global Struggle against Violent Extremism, and briefly - as one revealing Pentagon study described it - a war against "the Universal Adversary."

Continuing, the article introduces a novel statistic:
...Yet even if you include the 9/11 casualties, the number of Americans killed by international terrorists since the late 1960s (which is when the State Department began counting them) is about the same as that killed by lightning - or by accident-causing deer, or by severe allergic reactions to peanuts...

With ‘this product may contain nuts’ warnings taking over the Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose supermarket shelves, it begins to appear that Britain, long accused by one short General of being a ‘nation of shopkeepers’, has began a conscious Long War Against Peanuts (or L-WAP as suggested by Tony Blaire's branding agency).
Perhaps it is a disbelief in the notion of terrorism, or an ingrained resentment towards America, or a defeatest attitude which offers that if Britain can't protect it's citizens against random tube bombings, the least it can do is warn against nuts…we shall never really know.
What is clear is that when picking up a carton of milk or a can of baked beans, a jar of pickled beetroot or some crunchy Skippy peanut butter, we can rest assured that the product MAY contain nuts, and that the world outside the pack may too.
